Hunger or Habit? Can You Have Your Cake And Eat It? Podcast #20 Get Real with The English Sisters

Hunger or Habit? Can You Have Your Cake And Eat It?
In this episode of Get Real with The English Sisters we get down to the nitty, gritty, of Hunger or Habit and can you have your cake and eat it! Do you eat when you are actually hungry or is it just habit. The the ugly truth about habit is that most of us are programmed to eat 2 or 3 regular meals plus snacks and to finish everything on our plate. A lot of our clients find that they eat out of habit to soothe an unmet emotion or need. For instance when they are frustrated, anxious, angry or happy. The habit and rituals that are formed around food are so embedded in our culture that it is often difficult to realise at a conscious level when we are damaging our health. Eating purely out of habit can make you put on unwanted and unhealthy weight leading to numerous health complications such as high blood pressure, diabetes and feeling low.
Eating purely out of habit can literally weigh you down in every sense of the word. What we think we are eating can also influence our hunger. In this scientific study ,“ Mind over milkshakes: mindsets, not just nutrients, determine ghrelin response“ – Alia J Crum et al. Health Psychol. 2011 July. They researched how mindset can have a huge effect on triggering the gut peptide Ghrelin , that adverts us when we are hungry. In two separate occasions 46 participants consumed a milkshake when they were informed that it was a low calorie milkshake their hunger response was triggered a lot sooner and when the same participants drank the same milkshake and were told it was an indulgent high calorie milkshake their hunger response was triggered much later and consequently they felt full for a longer period of time.
We come to the conclusion that we can choose to enjoy our food and eat healthy non processed food whenever we can. We can ask ourselves each time we reach out for food are we really hungry or is it just are minds that are telling us its time for food. We can reach out for a glass of water as often hunger is mistaken for thirst and most of us are dehydrated.
We can enjoy our food and eat mindfully enjoying every bite when we are actually hungry. To enjoy a varied diet and avoid demonising certain foods because we think you can have your cake and eat it! When you are REALLY hungry.
